Job Purpose: To assist in the delivery of a comprehensive range of excellent customer focused services, promoting the aims of the library service and taking part in a full range of activities for children and adults to help encourage library use.
To provide excellent customer service at all time and deal with all service users
Supporting library users to use the library space appropriately
To undertake all day to day library duties including issuing and discharging library materials, shelving, maintaining, sorting and tidying stock and the library space and assisting in the provision of services such as the Schools Library Service and Home Delivery Service.
To carry out administrative routines such as dealing with new stock, filing, distributing materials and ordering stationary and other items as required.
To issue concessionary travel permits and answer travel related enquiries.
To participate in a full range of library events and promotional activities for adults and children, including supporting author visits, creating displays, delivering Bookbug sessions, story-telling and craft activities.
To participate in the promotion of the service through new initiatives, existing provision and front line delivery including outreach work
To assist users with ICT support and assistance with the use of PCs, the internet, WiFi, the photocopier, scanner, microfiche and any other library equipment
To assist users with the selection of reading materials as well as with requests, research enquiries for but not limited to the Local & Family History service, and all other information needs which may be by phone, email or face to face.
To work with colleagues across Midlothian Council as appropriate
To undertake relief duties at other branches as required
To comply with all Midlothian Council Health & Safety at work procedures
To comply with all Midlothian Council policies and legislation such as GDPR, financial procedures etc.
Key-holding responsibility for opening and closing branches as required
Correctly carry out all cash handling procedures according to Midlothian Council’s processes and procedures.
The post holder must provide evidence of competency in literacy and numeracy skills such as a minimum of three Standard Grade level 3 passes, including English and Mathematics, or an SVQ2 or equivalent. The European Computer Driving Licence is a desirable qualification for this position.
