Vattenfall has partnered with Midlothian Council to form Midlothian Energy Limited (MEL) – a joint venture established to deliver low carbon heat to new homes across the region and to advance a range of sustainable energy initiatives.
The first phase of the MEL heat network will provide low carbon heating to approximately 3,000 homes, schools, and retail premises in Shawfair Town, along with over 600 homes in Craighall Village. This heat will be sourced from the Millerhill Recycling and Energy Recovery Centre, an energy-from-waste facility operated by FCC Environment.
As part of MEL’s creation, we are committed to delivering long-term community benefits for the people of Midlothian. A key focus is building a strong career pathway in Scotland’s heat networks sector. We are working in partnership with local organisations to deliver established school and educational programmes, create apprenticeships with our contractors, and generate new job opportunities through our ongoing projects.
