To the south of Edinburgh, Midlothian is a rural area set in the backdrop of the majestic Pentland Hills with expanses of woodland and greenery.
Originally a predominantly mining area, the scale of past industrial activity is best viewed at the National Mining Museum Scotland, where the 1,625 foot shaft and winding tower powered by Scotland’s largest steam engine is housed. A unique visitor centre right on the Borders Railway line, the museum is an insight into Midlothian’s rich heritage and history.
At the foot of the Pentland Hills, Destination Hillend (Midlothian Snowsports Centre) is a great place to learn to ski or snowboard on the dry ski slope. It is all about location in Midlothian. In addition to Rosslyn Chapel, we were also the location of the most famous scene in the television series Outlander. The historic and beautiful Glencorse Auld Kirk, nestled in the grounds of Glencorse House, with The Pentlands as a backdrop, is where Claire and Jamie Fraser got married. A stunning location with its own history too, Glencorse House is also an incredibly popular wedding venue.
